The art of rosemaling or "rose painting" is emblematic of Norwegian ethnic identity. Itinerant painters traveled throughout 1800s rural Norway decorating walls, furniture, and dinnerware with floral patterns. Her mother-in-law, Helen Wilhelmsen, a talented rosemaler, inspired Rebecca Wilhelmsen to learn the craft. Rebecca apprenticed with National Heritage Fellow Eldrid Skjold Arntzen of Connecticut. This bowl was turned by Harald Thuestad. The writing along the rim invites viewers to fill it with ale so the guests will drink and dance a halling freely.
