The Hardanger fiddle, named for a region in Norway, is unique in both sound and appearance. In addition to the four violin strings, five strings run underneath the fingerboard. These "sympathetic" strings, which vibrate without being bowed, give the instrument an ethereal sound. Dave Golber fell in love with Norwegian fiddle music before enrolling at Boston's North Bennett Street School to learn violin making. He based the decorative inlay and drawings on Viking mythology, rather than traditional geometric and floral patterns.
